Not wanting to stand still with the development of the 916SPS, in 1999 Ducati introduced the upgraded 996SPS, which featured a host of small chassis and engine changes to keep up the pace or their race teams. This new version of the famous SPS (or Sport Production Special) bikes featured the same 996cc belt-driven desmodromic engine, producing 123bhp at 9500rpm but with revisions to various components to enhance it further.
Fast forward another 12 months and in 2000 a second generation 996SPS hit the showrooms, built to homologate a new cylinder head design for the factory race teams, this incarnation became knows as the ‘FR2’ and is considered the holy grail of the 996SPS bikes.
Whilst it shares almost all of the original components of the earlier versions, these FR2’s had factory-fit Ohlins suspension all round, compared to the previous models Showa units.
With only 149 examples produced (source: Standard Catalog of Ducati Motorcycles by Ian Falloon), the FR2 is one of the lowest production numbered bikes in the history of Ducati and is a true collector bike.
Our example not only presents in concourse condition throughout (with factory labels remaining undamaged and unmarked) it also benefits from being supplied with the original paddock stand and owners books. This bike will be supplied with a full belt service and 12 month MOT for the new owner.
